Students eating nachos at the PBIS Nacho Party

Dear Peterson Families,

On behalf of the Peterson school community, I extend my sincere gratitude to the Peterson PTA, and especially to the Gala Planning Committee, for organizing such a successful and memorable evening yesterday. The care, dedication, and thoughtful planning that went into this event were evident throughout, and the result was a truly outstanding experience for all who attended.

Thank you as well to everyone who participated in the event and to those who generously donated items to the gala auction; your contributions provide meaningful support to our school and students. It was a pleasure to gather as a community beyond our daily routines of drop-off and pick-up, and we certainly look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come.

Speaking of 'firsts' this last Wednesday we hosted our very first PBIS “pop-up” event! This surprise celebration for our students was a powerful way to recognize and reinforce our students’ daily commitment to being Safe, United, Responsible, and Focused, and the excitement was contagious. With more than 300 students qualifying to attend, our nacho party was filled with smiles, laughter, and a strong sense of Dolphin pride as students enjoyed a fun and well-earned reward for their positive choices.

Events like this bring our PBIS values to life and remind us that when we celebrate positive behavior, we strengthen our school community and create an environment where everyone can thrive. Thank you to PTA for sponsoring the event and thank you to the many staff members who helped serve our students their delicious reward!

Please see the following highlights of events happening at Peterson and throughout our district this week.

With Dolphin Pride,

Dr. Smith-Johnson
Principal

Counselor's Corner . . .

Hello Parents,

During the month of February, our school counselor will be teaching our upper grade students (3rd to 5th grade) about how to resolve conflicts with others, while our primary grade students (TK to 2nd grade) will be learning the difference between reporting versus tattling.

In the conflict resolution lesson, students will learn what is a conflict, how to resolve conflicts in different situations, and what are some ways to resolve conflicts peacefully.

In the reporting versus tattling lesson, students will learn the difference between reporting something to a trusted adult versus tattling on someone to get them into trouble. Students will also learn when it is necessary to report to an adult so that they can get the help they need, especially in emergency situations.

Parents of our upper grade students can help their child learn to resolve conflicts by helping them define what a “conflict” is, the importance of seeing things from the other person’s perspective, and how it is okay to agree to disagree in certain circumstances. It is also important to set a good example at home by teaching him/her how to resolve conflicts with siblings/others in a peaceful manner.

Parents of our primary grade students can help their child learn the difference between reporting and tattling by helping them understand what it means to report an incident versus tattling to get someone in trouble or to make oneself look good. It is important for children to know that they can come talk to you about anything, especially if they or someone they know needs help, but tattling on others to get someone in trouble should be discouraged.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me, your school counselor at mpauw@hbcsd.us

English Learner Advisory Council

The English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) consists of parents, staff, and community members who advise the principal and school staff on programs and services for English Learners. The committee helps review and provide input on the school’s English Learner program, language development strategies, and how Title I and other funds are used to support these students. ELAC also promotes communication between English learner families and the school, encourages parent involvement, and ensures that the needs and voices of English Learner students and their families are represented in the school’s decision-making process. We are seeking up to five parents of English learners to serve on this committee that meets three times per year. If you are interested in serving personally or you would like to nominate somebody, please email Dr. Smith-Johnson at KSmith-johnson@hbcsd.us
