The Week of May 5th

Dear Peterson Families,

We had another incredibly busy week learning and community-building with our annual 'Donuts with Dolphins event, our final skate night of the year, and then our 'Final Mile' event for Kids Run the O.C. Check out a few of the pictures below highlighting these events.

Thank you to the many PTA Board members and volunteers who made it all happen for our Peterson community! A very special 'thank you' to coaches Lauren and Rachel for handling all of the behind-the-scenes coordination and our countless other PTA and parent volunteers who have helped train our Dolphins from January to this past week. Peterson had a very strong showing with over 80 students running on Saturday.

Please note the following updates regarding events listed in the sections below that are happening at Peterson and throughout HBCSD this week.

Looking Ahead to CAASPP Testing:

Grades 3-5 will participate in CAASPP state testing for math and language arts and grade 5 also takes the science and physical education portions of the state tests.

CAASPP State testing for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade will begin the week of May 13th. Make-up testing will occur weekly, as needed during this time period through May 30th, as needed.

Please note that your child tests best when they test with their class (as a general rule), so doing your best to avoid appointments, tardies, absences, and interruptions during this time is helpful to them. If you do need to make appointments, please try for the afternoon.

Students who arrive late during this time will be required to wait in the office until that testing portion has concluded for the day in order to ensure all appropriate testing protocol in our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classrooms. Throughout this time, our entire school will observe "Quiet-Campus" protocols to ensure optimal testing conditions for our upper grades.

2025-26 Registration

We are now accepting registrations for the upcoming school year for all new and incoming students.

Please understand that your child will not be registered until ALL required documents are submitted and verified.

Independent Study Contracts:

This is a reminder that the last day to complete short-term independent study for this school year is May 30, 2025. This deadline ensures that students have enough time to complete and submit all assigned work which is required to receive attendance credit for issued contracts. Students are limited to 15 days total of Independent Study per school year.

If your child is going to be absent from school due to vacation/or travel for four (4) or more days, please contact the school office to request an Independent Study Contract. Please understand that we need at least two weeks prior to the start date of the absence in order to prepare materials. Here are some key points to remember:

  • Independent Study Contracts are requested through Ms. Renae Ciulei, rciulei@hbcsd.us, in the office at least two weeks prior to the absence.
  • By law, the maximum number of days for an independent study are 15 days for the entire school year.
  • In order to receive credit for the absence, ALL work must be completed and returned by the due date..
  • Incomplete independent study contracts result in unexcused absences, which could result in a referral to the Student Attendance and Review Board (SARB).
  • Please be respectful of our teachers and staff who spend a great deal of time putting these contracts together. If you are requesting an independent study contract, please show us the same courtesy by spending the time on helping your child complete and return the assigned work upon his/her return to school.
