The Week of April 7th

Dear Peterson Families,

Please note the following updates regarding events happening at Peterson and throughout HBCSD this week.

1st Grade Visits the Aquarium of the Pacific

Thank you to our amazing Peterson PTA for helping significantly offset the cost of our 1st graders annual field trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific! This trip enables our first graders to get an up close & personal experience with much of our local sea life.

Looking Ahead to CAASPP Testing:

Grades 3-5 will participate in CAASPP state testing for math and language arts and grade 5 also takes the science and physical education portions of the state tests.

CAASPP State testing for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade will begin the week of May 13th. Make-up testing will occur weekly, as needed during this time period through May 30th, if needed.

Please note that your child tests best when they test with their class (as a general rule), so doing your best to avoid appointments, tardies, absences, and interruptions during this time is helpful to them. If you do need to make appointments, please try for the afternoon.

Students who arrive late during this time will be required to wait in the office until that testing portion has concluded for the day in order to ensure all appropriate testing protocol in our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classrooms. Throughout this time, our entire school will observe "Quiet-Campus" protocols to ensure optimal testing conditions for our upper grades.

Counselor's Corner:

Hello Parents,

During the month of April, our school counselor will be teaching our primary grade students all about self-control. Throughout the lesson, she will be going over how we can practice being in control of our own feelings and actions here at school by learning various strategies to slow down and make smarter decisions. Parents can help by reviewing the “Stop, Think, Act” strategy with their children at home:

1.    STOP: Take a moment to pause and breathe, allowing yourself to calm down and gather your thoughts.
2.    THINK: Consider the situation, potential consequences, and possible actions.
3.    ACT: Choose a response that is thoughtful and appropriate, rather than acting on impulse.

Our upper grade students will be learning about Executive Functioning Skills. These skills help students stay on track and improve their school success. Here are some strategies that you can go over with your child at home:

1.    Planning & Prioritizing Tasks: Encourage your child to make a list of tasks or homework assignments, and help them decide which ones are most important or need to be done first.
2.    Staying Organized: Teach your child to keep their school supplies and materials in a consistent place, so they can find everything easily. You can also help them organize their backpack and schoolwork at the end of each day.
3.    Task Initiation: Encourage your child to start tasks without putting them off. Breaking big tasks into smaller steps can help them feel less overwhelmed and more motivated to get started.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our school counselor, Mei Pauw, at mpauw@hbcsd.us.

Independent Study Contracts:

If your child is going to be absent from school due to vacation/or travel for four (4) or more days, please contact the school office to request an Independent Study Contract. Please understand that we need at least two weeks prior to the start date of the absence in order to prepare materials. Here are some key points to remember:

  • Independent Study Contracts are requested through Ms. Renae Ciulei, rciulei@hbcsd.us, in the office at least two weeks prior to the absence.
  • By law, the maximum number of days for an independent study are 15 days for the entire school year.
  • In order to receive credit for the absence, ALL work must be completed and returned by the due date..
  • Incomplete independent study contracts result in unexcused absences, which could result in a referral to the Student Attendance and Review Board (SARB).
  • Please be respectful of our teachers and staff who spend a great deal of time putting these contracts together. If you are requesting an independent study contract, please show us the same courtesy by spending the time on helping your child complete and return the assigned work upon his/her return to school.
