Igniting Young Minds to Reach for a Bright Future

Hawes Elementary Named a California Distinguished School

Posted Date: 3/27/25 (5:00 PM)

Huntington Beach City School District is proud to announce that Hawes Elementary School has been recognized as a 2025 California Distinguished School—one of the state’s top honors for public schools. This prestigious designation, awarded by the California Department of Education, celebrates schools that demonstrate exceptional student achievement, a commitment to equity, and outstanding educational programs.

This year, only 336 elementary schools across California received this distinction, with 45 schools honored in Orange County. Schools were recognized in two categories: Exceptional Student Performance, which highlights overall academic success, and Closing the Achievement Gap, which commends schools making significant progress with historically underserved student groups. To qualify, schools needed to meet high standards in areas such as English language arts, math, attendance and suspension rates.

“This designation is a testament to the strong academic foundation and nurturing environment that Hawes has built, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive,” said Superintendent Dr. Leisa Winston. “Hawes has excelled in fostering rigorous, innovative instruction, providing dedicated care for students, and cultivating a culture of collaboration and support.”

Hawes Elementary’s investment in a positive, high-achieving school climate has been a key factor in earning this prestigious title. Through innovative instructional practices, student-centered learning, and robust community engagement, Hawes continues to provide a nurturing yet academically rigorous environment. Some examples of these efforts include:

  • Teachers implement project-based learning to immerse students in hands-on experiences, such as STEM challenges and collaborative research projects. The school also emphasizes the importance of the arts and creative expression, offering opportunities for students to explore activities like show choir, visual arts, and more. Through data-driven instruction, Hawes provides targeted small-group interventions in reading, writing, and math, ensuring each student receives personalized support and a well-rounded education.

  • Hawes fosters a dynamic learning environment where collaboration and engagement thrive. Leadership opportunities are embedded in the school culture through student council, the Green Team (garden club), and peer mentoring programs, instilling a strong sense of responsibility and community among students. Additionally, Hawes' focus on attendance and showing up every day reinforces that learning extends beyond the classroom, creating a strong connection between school and home.

  • The involvement of Hawes families, especially through the dedicated Hawes PTSA, has been instrumental to the school’s accomplishments. The PTSA actively supports the school by organizing enriching events, such as the fall festival, color run, and playing a key role in various school-wide initiatives that enhance the student experience and create a vibrant community atmosphere.

“We are beyond proud to receive this accolade, especially as we celebrate our school’s 50th anniversary,” said Hawes Principal Mrs. Julie Jennings. “This milestone represents five decades of greatness, dedication, and community spirit. Being named a California Distinguished School is the perfect ‘bow’ on this incredible celebration, commemorating both the legacy of Hawes and the bright future ahead.”

This latest merit continues Hawes Elementary’s tradition of exceptionalism, with previous recognitions including California Distinguished School (2014, 2020), Gold Ribbon School (2016), and Pivotal Practice School (2022).

“This award belongs to all of us,” Jennings added. “Our students have worked hard, our educators have given their all, and our families continue championing student advancement. We are truly ‘Hawesome!’”

Hawes Elementary will be formally honored at the statewide California Distinguished Schools ceremony in May and recognized by the HBCSD Board of Trustees that same month.
